Barboglio de Gaioncelli

Barboglio de Gaioncelli Franciacorta producer

Franciacorta from Barboglio de Gaioncelli

For over 200 years, the Barboglio de Gaioncelli winery has been growing and making wine, producing Franciacorta since 1875.

The estate is around 80 hectares, but only 24 ha are planted as vineyards. Of those 24 ha, the best 14 ha are used to make their own wines (using their own cellar bottles, winemakers, labels etc).

10 hectares of those 14 ha are used to grow white wine grape varieties chardonnay and pinot blanc for still white wines as the Curtefranca Bianco DOC, and for the preparation of the sparkling bases of the Franciacorta, Brut, Extra Dry, Saten and "Claro" Dosage Zero Riserva.

1 hectare is used to grow the difficult pinot noir, used blended with chardonnay to make the sparkling bases of the Ranciacorta Extra Brut and the Franciacorta Rosé "Donna Alberta".

The remaining vineyards grow a selection of clones of red grape varieties, such as Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Barbera and Nebbiolo. These are used to prepare the Curtefranca Rosso DOC.

The harvest is all manual. The grapes are collected and transported to the winery in small crates. In the cellars, the pressing process is performed at low pressure with modern machines, to preserve all the organoleptic characteristics of the different bunches (grapes from the same vineyard).

Fermentation and all the first vinification cycles are in stainless steel, and temperature controlled, for high quality results.

A small part of the wines, both red and white, are aged in oak barrels, and then used for blending the cuvee, to create and show more typical characters on their wines.

Very characteristc of Barboglio de Gaioncelli is the long ageing process and times.  After the second fermentation in the bottles, the wine remains in contact with the lees, the yeasts once the fermentation is completed.

To classify a wine as Franciacorta, the DOCG regulation require it to remain in contact with the lees for a minimum of 18 months. Barboglio de Gaioncelli age their Franciacorta wines for a minimum of 30 months for the Brut and Extra Dry DOCG (their entry level wines), rising to 72 months (6 years) for the Riserva.

The winery's annual production:

  • 35,000 bottles of DOCG Franciacorta (6 types: Brut, Extra Dry, Saten, Extra Brut, Rosè and Riserva)
  • 25,000 of DOC CurteFranca (white and red)

In these numbers, their products are exclusive, even though they are an established  winery with over a century making wine.

Their headquarters, cellar surrounded by their own vineyards, and restaurant are in the Cortefranca municipality, about 4 km from Lake Iseo.

The proximity of the lake, that guarantees a high temperature range between night and day, combined with an unique morainic soil, very rich in minerals, allow the vines to be grown in optimal conditions and environment.
